To Continue or No?

Some people have asked me if I will be continuing with this blog, and honestly I'm not really sure. I'd like to think my life is as interesting as ever, that I'm just cool enough to warrant maintaining a running public dialogue about going to the grocery store. However, the whole reason I started this blog was because I was going somewhere interesting that people wouldn't know about. I was writing about a new culture. I think it might be an entirely different thing when I'm writing about some of the same people who might be reading. Lines crossing, weirdness ensuing, all that. In the sense of audience pleasing, I think the conclusion would have to be to just end gracefully.

However, I find that I gained quite a bit by maintaining the blog. Oddly enough, it forced me to live more in the moment, so that I could write about it later. If I was at home and there was the opportunity to do something fun, something perhaps worth documenting, I took that opportunity whereas without that impetus, I might have sat by and thought, I'll just wait for the next one, I'm tired today. I did more because I was expected to provide interesting information about my life. The idea that this might be a way to push myself to live life more fully is one I hadn't previously considered, but is a very valid one. And finally, no offense to South Carolina, but I sort of thought I wouldn't be coming back here, and while I'm happy with the decision I've made, I am disappointed to feel like I'm just moving backwards. I think trying to look at South Carolina the same way I looked at Nicaragua, as though it were a new place with its own crazy culture might help me feel like I have learned something, like I am moving forward. Re-examining my own culture in light of what I've learned might be an interesting proposition anyway.

So in conclusion, I think I'm going to wait and see. If I see things that seem worth documenting, if I am able to re-examine, then I'll do so. If not, in one or two weeks, I'll be shutting down. If everyone stops reading, that's fine too, as my reasons for maintaining have more to do with me than with anyone else. But before I go, a thank you to everyone who did read for a while. Thanks for sharing Nicaragua with me. In a couple years, when I make it back down there, or to somewhere even more fabulous, I hope you'll read all about that too.

You imply that you can finish your PC stint. So does that mean you have the opportunity in the future to finish your PC duties or will you have to reapply and all that jazz?

Denise,

I think there are reasons to continue (well reasoned and already explained in your blog). The blog is a journal with all those associates benefits, yet one that motivates you because others read and enjoy it. And, if anyone could find interesting tidbits of life in SC, my bets would be on you. Actually, I'd really like to hear your perspectives of the US and SC now that you've been "outside" for a while. What do you see about us? Later, if you run out of interesting stuff to talk about, you can always come out to our house. The chickens, goats, horses, dogs, children are rather perpetually entertaining and perplexing in their behaviors.
Best wishes,
Briana

The Land of Lost Things

I met my new therapist last week.  I test drove a few, and she was the one that stuck.  She seems like she's not going to let me get by with any bullshit, and she said a couple of things that zinged me in our very first meeting.  That was unexpected, delightful, and now, with time to think about it, terrifying. I've been doing so much soul searching lately, so much careful consideration of my life and where I am - you'd think I'd be finding myself, but instead I feel so completely lost.  A few reasons: 1. I sabotage relationships in a really predictable way.  I had always thought of this behavior in one way, but with one sentence, this woman last week made me question everything I thought about that.  It's good to question it; it's what I wanted, but to be confronted so quickly by something that I had never considered is frightening.  I've spent so much time trying to figure this stuff out, and it turns out that I've been so completely wrong about ...

Series Finale

Life is not like Sex and the City, or Private Practice, or any other show where people in their late 20's / 30's / 40's are dating for our amusement. It's not fun. It's not glamorous. Relationships do not end with a lesson learned and a glass of wine. Okay, the wine is fairly accurate. The rest of it is crap. We watch those shows because of how inaccurate they are. We'd like to believe that after our latest heartbreak, we will recline in a bubble bath or in front of our computers, marveling at our newfound wisdom and patting ourselves on the back for becoming a more mature person. Let's for a moment apply this entirely artificial paradigm to my life. The basic ingredients are there: single woman in her distressingly late 20s, eligible-ish men, dates, alcohol, occasionally fabulous clothes. Hell, I've even got the klatch of cackling besties to tell me that the latest guy is unworthy of my distress. The basics are here. Things just don't see...

2011 Reading Challenges

On the first day of this new year, I am pulling together the reading challenges in which I want to participate.  There are so many that sound interesting that I'm not doing, particularly a bunch of them that are regional authors, which I'm trying to cover with my Global Reading Challenge.  I've chosen a bunch of them, but the problem won't be reading quantity, but more like reading strategy.  I read 3 or 4 books a week and most of these challenges allow crossovers, so I see no problems reading enough books, merely reading the right books and then, perhaps more challenging, writing about them, which some challenges require, and some only suggest.  Either way, it's a neat way to prioritize reading for the coming year. The Challenges in Which I Shall Participate Southern Literature Challenge - I've never read enough Southern Lit, and while some of the newer stuff is truly awful, I'd like to explore some older books. It's any book set in the South by a S...
